How to Redirect, Intercept, or Stop a Shipment in Transit

If you need to change the course of a shipment after it has been sent, you can use the intercept or redirection services provided by major carriers like USPS, UPS, and FedEx. Each carrier has specific procedures and limitations. Here’s how you can manage these requests:

USPS Package Intercept®

  • Eligibility: Not all packages are eligible for interception. The package must be sent with a service that includes tracking, such as Priority Mail® or First-Class Package Service®.
  • Process:
    • Request an intercept through the USPS website by logging into your account.
    • Select the package you wish to intercept.
    • Choose to have it returned to you, redirected to a new address, or held at a post office for pickup.
  • Fees: A fee is charged for successful intercepts, and additional postage may be required if redirecting to a new address.

UPS Delivery Intercept®

  • Eligibility: Most packages shipped by UPS can be intercepted, including international shipments.
  • Process:
    • Log in to your UPS account and access the Tracking or Shipment History tab.
    • Select the package and choose from options such as return to sender, deliver to another address, reschedule delivery, or hold for pickup.
  • Fees: UPS charges a fee for intercepting a package, which varies based on the type of intercept requested.

FedEx Delivery Manager®

  • Eligibility: Interception is available for most domestic shipments; availability may vary for international shipments.
  • Process:
    • Use the FedEx Delivery Manager to request an intercept.
    • Choose to redirect the package to another address, hold it at a FedEx location, reschedule delivery, or return the package to the sender.
  • Fees: Fees for FedEx intercept services depend on the new delivery instructions and the timing of the request.

General Guidelines

  • Timing: The sooner you request an intercept, the higher the likelihood of success. Make your request as soon as you realize a change is needed.
  • Verification: You may need to verify your identity or provide additional authorization to process an intercept request.
  • Cost: Be aware that all intercepts and redirections are subject to fees, which vary depending on the carrier and the specifics of the request.
